*YCL Press Statement Western Cape* * *
January 9, 2012 *YCL WESTERN CAPE STATEMENT ON 2011 MATRIC RESULTS* * * The Young Communist League of South Africa (Ufasimba) in the Western Cape Province welcomes matric results from the class of 2011 as released by the Minister of Basic Education. The YCLSA in the Western Cape Province would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those who performed well to pursue their career path through post schooling education and training system. On the same breath, YCLSA would also like to encourage those who did not pass their Grade 12 not to give up and make use of the opportunities made available by the Department of Higher Education and Training to carry on with their studies. The class of 2011 in Western Cape made us proud by achieving 82.9% of 2011 matric pass rate, as the YCLSA we are aware of the challenges facing learners especially from the working class and the poor background; and under the system of capitalism we will continue to confront them through our right to learn campaign and other campaigns. We encourage all these learners to go all out and use any opportunity that comes their way and register in any institution of their choice within higher learning and training sector. Nevertheless, it will never be enough of our role to only celebrate this achievement by the province without understanding whether these achievements come within areas where there is poor infrastructure and poor facilities. It is important for the YCL to analyze the situation and be able to detect if there are any improvements and achievements made in our disadvantaged communities (township) dominated by the poor and blacks in particular as they cannot afford to take their kids to Multi- Racial School which are more expensive for their survival. The YCLSA is also encouraged by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande who has implemented the commandment on education from the Freedom Charter that says *“all doors of learning shall be open”. *There are Further Education and Training Colleges (FET) and Sector Education Training Authority (SEATs) which are not an alternative but essential in skilling young people and accept both those who passed and didn’t in the class of 2011. These institutions cater for even those who are dropouts from school in previous years due to financial and academic challenges. It has to be noted with great concern the fact that many learners from our schools were taught Math’s Literacy and Life Orientation and both subjects count *zero %* in terms of the criteria used by Universities and the majority of these learners from poor background become victims of the system that is not of their creation as they perform very well in these subjects but cannot use them to access Universities. We appeal to both Ministers for Basic Education and Higher Education and Training to discuss the matter with the assistance of educators who directly advise learners to choosing subjects. As we celebrate the life and times of the late Comrade Joe Slovo, a former General Secretary of the SACP, effective and skillful MK Chief of operation and well respected MK Chief of staff; and a long time leader of the African National Congress, we would like to challenge the Provincial Government of the Western Cape Province to table to the public the work plan focusing on the improvement of basic education in disadvantaged communities with a specific target on coloureds and african schools in particular. We are also interested to know if in the 2011 matric pass rate of 82.9% the schools within coloured and black communities have made any achievements. As the YCLSA we could like as well to encourage all students entering into institutions of higher learning and training to join mass progressive formations such as South African Student Congress (SASCO), YCLSA and ANCYL, as these formations are not only concerned with the interpretation of the world but to change it for the best interest of students especially from the working class and the poor background.
