January 10, 2012 *STATEMENT OF THE YOUNG COMMUNIST LEAGUE OF SOUTH AFRICA ON THE RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS AND THE 2011 MATRIC RESULTS* * * As we mark the reopening of schools in the Province, the Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the Province takes this opportunity to welcome all learners and wish them well in the year ahead. We also cautiously welcome the matric results as released by the Provincial Department of Education. We nonetheless want to take this opportunity to congratulate the ANC led government on the strides made in advancing the quality of education in the last seventeen years (17 years) which has started bearing fruits as observed in the last few years. We also want to congratulate all stakeholders, particularly teachers and salute the learners of Class of 2011 which has shown a general improvement in other categories of learning but we do so mindful of the fact that the Province` s percentage has dropped by 3, 6 % in the past year. We are in agreement with the MEC of Education in the Province that there is an urgent need for an objective and detail analysis explaining this undesirable situation by all who share in the vision of possible progress, and in protecting aspirations of every learner to fulfil their potential for a better and secured future. One of the challenge regarding the matric results is the over concentration on the figures (important as they may be) and less on the totality of the schooling system from Grade R because for us matric is reflection of a good foundational base connected towards a quest for knowledge, pursuit of wisdom, and the acquiring of innate and pertinent skills for them in building a better South Africa. The Young Communist League SA still condemns the publication of results as it violates the privacy of students and continues to benefit the profit sales of newspapers not even owned by the majority of our people. We also observed that the results still reflects the systemic and systematic challenges of the past that continue to inform the teaching environment and to which still lacks inclusivity and equalisation of learning and teaching for all. *OUR CALL;* · We renew our call for an immediate review in the appointment and operations of the Premier`s bursary fund · We call for a single uniform for all schools · We call for more to be done with greater effort in the John Taole Gaitsiwe District to improve schooling environment · Decisively Improve the time of delivery for learner and teaching material · Intensively improve the interventionist programs on literacy, life skills and orientation · Intensify the process of establishing a University in the Province, and the gearing of efforts towards free and quality public education Finally as we intensify our *Right to Learn Campaign* we want to say to all those who did not do well in the past year we encourage them to go back and double their efforts and to those who did well we wish them the very best in their new endeavours. *ISSUED BY AND ON BEHALF OF THE YOUNG COMMUNIST LEAGUE SA* * NORTHERN CAPE* * * *Contact: KeitumetseMathiba* *Media and Liaison Officer* *Cell: 076 1020 830* * * -- You are subscribed.
