*PRESS RELEASE*

**

*ANC CAUCUS (Gauteng legislature) on re-opening of schools and the year
ahead*

**

*17 January 2012*

**

ANC MP’s and MPL’s within Gauteng went out in their numbers this past
weekend to ensure that schools are ready for re-opening. We congratulate
the Gauteng department of education led by MEC Barbara Creecy for the
results of 2011. The department took initiative from the beginning of the
year to ensure improvement of the results. The improvement should be
accredited to all stakeholders, parents, communities, and teachers as well
as volunteers who assisted with extra lessons. The pass rate has also
shown to be qualitative as more students take up maths and science. We
congratulate the class of 2011 for outstanding results and encourage the
Class of 2012 to emulate an example of the class of 2011. We equally
encourage matriculants who haven’t made not to despair and work harder this
year.

****

The ANC Caucus in the Gauteng Legislature wishes all young pupils well in
the year 2012. This includes those who will be entering school for the
first time as well as matriculants who will be seeking opportunities in
institutions of higher learning and embarking on the journey of higher
education for the first time this year.

We send our condolences to the Sekwena family who tragically lost a mother
and wife, Gloria Sekwena. She lost her life when she was caught in the
unfortunate stampede at the University of Johannesburg. This tragic
incident was highly unfortunate and more importantly it’s an indication of
many young pupils wishing to enter the gates of higher education
institutions in order to free themselves from shackles of poverty and
socio-economic injustice. The Minister of higher education has swiftly
responded and we applaud him for releasing the green paper in order to find
a long term solution to this grave challenge facing many young people.

Education should not be a privilege for only a few. It’s a fundamental
right and with every child rejected or turned away in any institution, it’s
a loss of a potential leader in our society. We should all take collective
responsibility for our children’s education and Gloria Sekwena and many
parents like her, definitely heeded that call. She was an evidently
responsible parent who stopped at nothing to ensure that his son gets only
the best for his future. We hope that through these trying times, he will
find strength in knowing that his mother wanted only what was best for
him.

The Gauteng Department of education also went through an excruciating
court case of racism in relation to two Afrikaans medium schools (FOCHVILLE
HOERSKOOL AND FOCHVILLE LOSBERG PRIMARY SCHOOL). These schools have denied
admission to African children within the area, in the schools. This
absurdity has no place in the current democratic dispensation and we
condemn it. The Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) within the area has been
hands on in ensuring that this injustice is exposed. We applaud the
department for winning the court case and asserting that such racial antics
have no place in our society. Our members in the ANC caucus will be at the
schools to ensure that the school adheres to the court’s decision.

*Year 2012*

**

We should all fold up our sleeves and work towards bettering the lives of
our people. We wish all citizens in Gauteng and fellow South Africans a
fruitful and prosperous 2012. This is a year of action and delivery. ****
