*Cosatu slams Lungisa* *Staff Reporter, The Times, Johannesburg, 24 January 2012*Cosatu slammed the National Youth Development Agency after it called for education to be de-unionised.
Agency chairman Andile Lungisa said all the problems facing the education sector should be placed at the door of the unions.
He said unionisation, a system used effectively in factories and industries, could not be applied to something as serious as education.
But Cosatu, together with the SA Students' Congress, slammed the call.Phindile Kunene, Cosatu's Shopsteward magazine's editor, said Lungisa spoke in a "language akin to that of right wing and anti-working class".
"This ideological onslaught on teacher unions is premised on the false notion that organised teachers are selfishly concerned about themselves and could not care less about learners. This reasoning accords all the blame for our malfunctioning education system to teachers who are organised in unions."
She said teachers union Sadtu remained an asset in the transformation of the basic education system and the breeding of a culture of excellence.
Lungisa said the agency wanted a meeting with the unions and the Department of Basic Education over the issue.
Sasco secretary-general Themba Masondo said Lungisa "lacks the understanding of deep-rooted crisis" in the education system.
He said Lungisa must be ashamed for calling for the "weakening" of the capacity of teachers.
