*Minister asks SABC to suspend search for chief operating officer* *Staff Reporter and SAPA, Business Day, 30 January 2012*The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been asked to suspend its search for a chief operating officer, the communications ministry said on Monday.
Dina Pule, communications minister, had made the request to the SABC board after reading a newspaper report on the process being followed to fill the position, said Siyabulela Qoza, spokesman for the ministry.
"The minister immediately requested the board to suspend the current search and to follow a normal and wider executive appointment process," he said. "She wants to make sure the process is fair and that all applicants are considered."
Mr Qoza said he did not know whether the SABC would act on Ms Pule's request.
At the weekend, the Sunday Independent reported that Hlaudi Motsoeneng, described as "an African National Congress deployee at the SABC" and a supporter of President Jacob Zuma, was expected to get the job.
The position, the second most powerful at the broadcaster, had been advertised only internally and applicants given just three working days to apply, the newspaper reported.
Mr Motsoeneng was apparently going to be appointed despite not having a matric certificate or top management experience. Lulama Mokhobo, newly appointed chief executive of the SABC, reportedly said a matric certificate was not a requirement for the post.
