South African Government Cannot
Abandon Cuba As the Democratic
Alliance
Insists
Writing
about the historic defeat of Apartheid forces and UNITA in the battle of Cuito
Carnavale in Angola, Ronnie
Kasrils, referring to the role of Cuba, opines that, “Those patriots and
internationalists were
motivated by a single goal - an end to racial rule and genuine African
independence. After 13 years of defending Angolan sovereignty, the Cubans took
nothing home except the bones of their fallen and
our gratitude”.
The Cubans fought side-by-side with the progressive forces on the
African continent and the Military Wing of the African National Congress
Umkhonto weSizwe in particular against imperialist aggression and the racist
apartheid regime without expectation or demand for material gain. The Cuban
nation understood that there can be no peace and prosperity under unjust
conditions of apartheid which was declared a crime against humanity by the
United Nations.
The sacrifices made by the Cuban guerillas including paying the ultimate
price can never be repaid therefore Africans of revolutionary moral conscience
cannot
stand-by and rejoice at the suffering of Cubans. The United
States of America having failed to conquer the
Revolutionary Cuban government in the Battle of
the Bay of Pigs has resorted to the economic and commercial blockade of Cuba.
The human
rights principle which is the foundation of our Constitution informs our
foreign policy and maintenance of our historic relations with countries such as
Cuba.
It is against this backdrop that the SACP in the Brian Bunting District
applauds the South African government for consistently fighting the US blockade
of Cuba. We are further encouraged by
the gesture for financial assistance package agreement signed between SA and
Cuba. This
gesture will continue to foster the historic bonds of friendship and commitment
to the international struggle against neo-colonialism and imperialism.
We are appalled by the reaction of the DA’s shadow deputy minister of
trade and industry released on 6 February 2012 (in DA’s website) which is
consistent with the views expressed by a plebiscite referred to as Kenneth Mubu
DA spokesperson on foreign relations. These neo-liberal surrogates of the West
condemn our government for the gesture of goodwill. Where were these lunatics
when Cubans were fighting for liberation on the African Continent? What
sacrifices did they make for the freedom they now enjoy?
These agents of the Western imperialists insist that South Africa
must invest in “strategic partnerships”.
This is a guise for saying SA must prioritise the West who continue to plunder
and squander resource of the continent. The DA wants SA to forget historic ties
of friendship and focus on ties of convenience.
The ANC led Alliance will never denounce Cuba for they
serve as an inspiration through their resolute commitment to freedom, peace and
justice internationally.
The SACP in the Brian Bunting District will, jointly with Friends of
Cuba Society in the Western Cape,
host the Cuban Ambassador His Excellency
Angel Villa to celebrate the Cuban
Revolution and the 100 years of South African Struggle. This event will be
held as follows:
Date : Sunday 12 February
2012
Venue : Training Centre,
Khayelitsha
Time : 14h00
Our human solidarity with the struggle of Cubans against imperialist
blockade cannot be reduced to rands and cents because our bonds of friendship
are not just partnerships of convenience.
