*Young Communist League of South Africa - yclsa * *Gauteng statement on hearing loss by learners*
*thursday, 16 February 2012* In carrying out the ‘Joe Slovo Right to Learn Campaign’ the Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the province of Gauteng has come into contact with parents who raised a concern relating to learners losing a hearing. It is highlighted that this has been detected in the household from the kids who frequently want television and radio volumes to be increased and messages to be repeated during conversations. Preliminary investigations have shown that the kids are not exposed to conditions of consistent noise except in transports that ferry them to and from schools in which high volumes of music are played which is attributed as the probable source of the loss or reduced hearing suffered by the kids. As the YCLSA we will communicate in writing and through meetings to transport associations including taxi associations, to alert them about these preliminary findings and ask for their cooperation in avoiding noise (high volumes of music and radio) when transporting learners. We will also alert the Gauteng education department and request its intervention including a detailed research project about this phenomenon and curtail it before some sort of a hearing loss “epidemic” could break out among young people, the future adult population. If this matter is not addressed with the agency it deserves no sooner than later our province and the whole country could find themselves faced with such a hearing loss “epidemic”. As the YCLSA we take education, health and the general wellbeing of human society seriously. Meanwhile we are appealing to all those who are transporting learners to avoid loud volumes of music and radio and accordingly to all parents to caution and monitor those who transport learners. *Contact*** *Matankana Mothapo – Provincial Spokesperson *** *0827590900* * * -- You are subscribed.
