*Varsity student dies during protest*

*ECR Newswatch, East Coast Radio, 27 February 2012 *

A university student has died after falling from a building while watching a violent protest unfold at Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape.

More than 1 000 students went on the rampage, burning tyres and damaging property at the Mthatha campus today.

They are protesting their exclusion from the varsity.

Police say a group gathered on the roof of a building to watch the protest this morning.

It's believed a male student stepped onto a perspex skylight before falling six floors to his death.

The university's Angela Church has expressed outrage at the incident.

"We extend our deep sympathy to the family. The university community really mourns the death of one of our students and we find that the situation at Nelson Mandela Drive [campus] is a tragic indictment on the disruptive behaviour of a small group which affects everybody else," she said.
