*NEHAWU Condemns the Desecration of Cde Chris Hani’s Grave*

NEHAWU is deeply incensed by reports that the grave of struggle stalwart and former General Secretary of the SACP, Cde Chris Hani has been desecrated resulting in a R23,000 worth of damage. We condemn this abominable act of thuggery and cowardice and call on the law enforcement agencies to investigate this incident and put the perpetrators behind bars.

This unnecessary act of disrespect is a blatant act of provocation that needs to be condemned by all peace loving South Africans who are committed to a non-racial society as envisaged by this country’s liberators. Our union commends the Ekurhuleni municipality for setting aside an amount of R23, 000 to fix the gravestone without delay.

Cde Chris Hani was a principled leader who fought inequality and oppression and rejected all forms of discrimination without fail. He gallantly led the struggle against apartheid’s system of institutionalized oppression without flinching.

It will take more than a cowardly act to erase the legacy of Cde Chris Hani from the history of South Africa because his legacy is in the hearts of all progressive South Africans. The freedoms that these vandals enjoy today in this country were brought about by the sacrifices of people like Cde Chris Hani.
