Human Rights for Elites
SASCO statement on the Human Rights day 20th March 2012 As the country will be celebrating the human rights day, tomorrow, 21st March, we should always remember that, despite the consolidation of liberal political rights by the ANC government post the 1994 democratic breakthrough, the poor of this country continue to suffer from exploitation which they are subjected to by capitalism. We are, of cause of the view that among the most basic is a right to sustainable livelihood and education. The democratic breakthrough has only contributed in only guaranteeing, on paper these rights through the Bill of Rights. Despite this being guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, capitalism still continues to exclude the working class of our country from benefiting from them. Many young people of this country continue to be denied access to institutions of higher learning and some of those who have accessed are excluded every day, thus denying their right to education. Our people, especially in the squatter camps have less access to decent houses; our people are still excluded from higher education. It is only safe to say that the only group out of the oppressed to have benefitted from human rights is the BEE elites, who decided to declare themselves representatives of the oppressed masses in the economy. The South African Students’ Congress is therefore pleased that as we celebrate this year’s human rights day, there seem to be more vigour to ensure that the constitution is not used to further enrich the rich and leave the poor in a trap of poverty. We however call upon the poor and the working class to intensify their struggle against this exploitative socio-economic system. To students, we are saying: the struggle of the poor and the working class are our struggles; we must participate in the process to liberate our people as a whole.
