*NHI pilot project*

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa notes with delight the announcement that the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme will from next month be piloted in ten districts across the country.

The announcement was made by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi yesterday.

As DENOSA we are comfortable with the selection criteria of the ten districts, which centered on the burden of diseases, demographics, socio economic status, health service performance and district management capacity. We believe that this approach is comprehensive.

Significantly, we have been very critical of the delay by government to roll out this all important scheme. The announcement therefore comes at the right time and makes huge strides in the realization of the NHI that aims to ensure that all South Africans have access to quality healthcare irrespective of their socio-economic status.

"We congratulate the Minister for this bold and calculated move . We believe that the success of this scheme does not only depend on him but to the entire population, in particular health workers. We once more commit ourselves in playing a key role in strengthening and capacitating nurses on NHI as they are in the forefront of its implementation", says DENOSA General Secretary Thembeka Gwagwa.

We welcome the pronouncement that the NHI pilot project will pay special attention to vulnerable societies and there will be continuous monitoring and evaluation of the progress.

DENOSA believes that this initiative will provide an ideal opportunity for those remote hospitals and clinics to be revitalized.

"We reiterate our commitment to as successful roll out of the National Health Insurance scheme as the delivery of quality healthcare to all is central in our agenda", Gwagwa concludes.
