This is one of the resolutions taken at the party's provincial conference in Benoni, Gauteng at the weekend. The SACP in Gauteng will be taking its proposals to the national congress in July. Briefing the media in Johannesburg yesterday, newly-appointed provincial secretary Jacob Mamabolo said: "The constitutional proposals take into account the resolution of the SACP to establish branches and their implication for the growth of the party," he said. In what can be interpreted as a veiled attack on embattled ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema, Mamabolo said anyone who says now is the time for economic freedom is lost. "It was in this context that the congress resolved to stand against views that seek to revise the National Democratic Revolution. "The congress cautioned against attempts to introduce new concepts, such as characterising the current period as a stage of economic freedom based on the wrong perception that April 1994 was a stage of mere political freedom. "Any emphasis on economic contradictions over and above other contradictions runs the real risk of becoming narrow economism. The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) tried to put emphasis on the land. Where is the PAC?," he said. Asked if he was responding to Malema, Mamabolo downplayed the matter, saying he was not responding to anyone. "We will call a meeting with the ANC Youth League at an appropriate time," Mamabolo said. The Youth League has been calling for economic freedom in the country. A fuming Mamabolo rebuked those attacking the party's general secretary and minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande, saying that the party had noted a series of factional, unprincipled and personal attacks directed against its general secretary. The provincial lekgotla was attended by more than 400 delegates, six provincial secretaries and the keynote address was delivered by Nzimande.
