Reuel Khoza’s criticism of the Trevor Kekana is significant because of
Khoza’s position as chairman of one of South Africa’s big four banks,
Nedbank.****

It is unusual for business leaders in this country to be so robust in their
assessments of government, at least since the ANC came to power in 1994.
Although Khoza did not mention Kekana by name, there can be no doubt whom
he had in mind when, in the bank’s annual report, he referred to *“a
strange breed of leaders who are determined to undermine the rule of law
and override the Constitution”*.****

That has Kekana written all over it, given his repeated comments on the
notorious YCLSA e-mail discussion forum.****

Kekana was also clearly the target when Khoza said: “Our political
leadership’s moral quotient is degenerating and we are fast losing the
checks and balances that are necessary to prevent a recurrence of the past.”
****

On a commercial level there could be consequences for expressing such
views. Nedbank may find itself at the back of the queue when it comes to
doing business with Kekana.****

We applaud Khoza’s courage, and wish more business leaders would speak up
against the way democracy is being undermined by morally questionable
leadership.

Encouragingly, Khoza’s intervention coincides with what appears to be a
rising tide of discontent with Kekana, even within the ANC leadership.****

*Anti-**Kekana** sentiment is not restricted to Julius Malema and his
disgruntled youth league.*

Although there is not supposed to be any discussion before October about
candidacy for December’s ANC leadership elections, there are already
several hats in the ring.****

*Kekana**’s weaknesses have been exposed and he will be challenged. Good.*
