I agree with the comment made by Abongile Tiwani, however I have been
encouraging youth to continue their studies at FETs. Two of them are
studying at College of Cape Town. One after matric now doing business
studies. The other one doing mechanics after leaving school in Gr9. So I
definitely support the move to strengthen FETs as it is in most cases the
only way out for youth from disadvantaged areas to continue their studies.
Another point I emphasise is that parents should not force their children
to study for an academic matric, whilst the child has no interest in it or
is more technically inclined. University is not everything. The FET gives
the opportunity for theory and practise, which prepares the youth for a
career whether as an employee or as an employer.
