* THE SACP PAYS TRIBUTE TO REVEREND MOTLALEPULA CHABAKU*

The passing on of struggle veteran, Cde Motlalepula Chabaku is met with
sadness. The South African Communist Party joins multitude of South
Africans in paying tribute to this gallant leading woman of our struggle.
Rev Motlalepula was confronted from an early age by the colour bar, which
both by law and custom effectively prevented her like it did to the rest of
black majority from exercising any democratic rights, acquiring education
and skills, enjoying equal rights and opportunities and sharing equally the
benefits of the economic development of the country.

A deeply spiritual person, respected cleric and articulate feminist, Rev.
Motlalepula from a humble background and against all odds rose through the
ranks to become national secretary of the ANC women’s League and was part
of the organizers of the Transvaal Women’s March to Pretoria in 1956 in
opposition to pass laws. Rev Motlalepola was outspoken, she rejected narrow
nationalism, black chauvinism and other outlooks that are harmful to the
people’s cause. She was outstanding in carrying out her duties wherever she
was deployed. She served as Speaker and Member of NCOP in the Free State
Legislator and Gauteng legislature respectively.
