Cde Joel is a valuable comrade. But what is he saying here? Is he admitting failure of the Mapungubwe Institute?
Which is equally full of old-timers, by the way. If he wants to talk to the new, young cadres, why is he not here on the Communist University? Cde Joel has had plenty of opportunities to foster new leadership. There are plenty of examples of how to do it. President Zuma mentioned Harry Gwala and Govan Mbeki. We could also mention Jack Simons. This is not a new thing. Nor does it have to be about the Presidency. In fact it cannot start at that level. It starts at the mass level. Otherwise, it is elitist, or parliamentarist. I am afraid that Cde Joel has been seduced by the state institutions of bourgeois democracy, and is only thinking of those high positions. Whereas the NDR requires leadership in tens or hundreds of thousands of structures, and all of these leaders need to be quality.
