YCLSA Press Statement August 16, 2012
YCLSA SUPPORTS GOVERNMENT POSITION ON ISRAEL The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] welcomes the South African Government's stance in relation to Israel as articulated Cde Ebrahim Ebrahim, Deputy Minister for International Relations and Cooperations. The YCLSA wishes to remind South Africans that during apartheid South Africa; many countries around the world discouraged trips to South Africa and solidarity with Palestine, South Africa is doing the same. In addition to Israel facing increasing isolation in the cultural and academic sectors, since 2005, several countries have officially stepped down or ended diplomatic relations with Israel. The YCLSA also condemns the startegy of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the South African Zionist Federation and the Office of the Chief Rabbi in its attempts to isolate the Deputy Minister's statement as though it is not a government position. Recently, Cde Marius Fransman, also Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation expressed a similar position in Cape Town when he said: "Our government since 1994 has consistently supported the Palestinian cause whilst increasingly putting pressure on Israel towards a just and lasting solution on a number of levels including [an] economic-travel ban." We call upon all progressive forces to support the peoples of Palestine by supporting the call by government so as to facilitate a lasting peaceful resolution to the conflict.
