SACP
*SACP Dr Yusuf Dadoo District Statement, 29 August 2012* *Intention of Goldfields to retrench +2400 workers*The SACP is particularly disturbed by the management of South Deep Mine in Westonaria. It is evident that the management of South Deep are hell-bent to continue increasing the unemployment in the country through retrenching many workers.
We want to remind the management that in 2008, they retrenched over 2600 workers thus contributing immensely on the unemployment in the country. Four years later the management is intending to retrench another 2400 workers whilst the mine still has 50-years-plus lifespan. It is our view that retrenching 2400 workers out of 3600 plus is a total shutdown of the mine by the management and will badly affect the country and SADC region.
We are disgusted by the role of management which continues to discourage workers to join the National Union of Mineworkers whilst on the other hand they lobby support and membership for a rival union which they control. This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated and the SACP highly condemns these underhand evil tactics.
The SACP in the district calls on the relevant authorities, in particular the Departments of Mining and Labour to intervene. The SACP, Dr Yusuf Dadoo District (Krugersdorp), together with the surrounding mining communities will this Friday, 31st August 2012 lead a march to the mine to demand that the retrenchment be stopped and a proper engagement with the unions in particular the NUM.
