*Gold Fields miners agree to return to work*** *Allan Seccombe, Business Day, Johannesburg, 5 September 2012*STRIKING workers at Gold Fields have agreed to return to work starting with Wednesday evening's shift, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.
More than 12,000 workers downed tools at the eastern section of the Kloof Driefontein Complex in an illegal strike last Wednesday to protest against a mandatory funeral policy deduction from their wages as well as unhappiness with branch leadership of the NUM.
The leadership of the NUM has engaged with these workers and their issues and made a commitment that their demands will be investigated and attended to," the NUM said.
"The workers overwhelmingly agreed to return to work and made a commitment to never again be misled by people with ulterior motives," he said.
"We can confirm the strike has been resolved and we are grateful for the intervention of the NUM president (Senzeni Zokwana) in achieving this outcome. Production will resume with the night shift tonight," Sven Lunsche, Gold Fields' spokesman.
