*Wild claims are due to longing for the ugly past, NUM tells Democratic Left***

The National Union of Mineworkers rejects with contempt the accusation by an organisation calling itself the Democratic Left that the NUM was involved in the violence at Lonmin.

"If they have the information that any of our members was involved, let them hand that information over to the police" says Frans Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.

The NUM is perturbed by organisations such as the so-called Democratic Left that make silly and gross misrepresentations in order to get cheap publicity using its name. The police must fully investigate these claims and take appropriate action.

As the NUM, we have always argued that we distance ourselves from violence, threats and intimidation and that if any of our members are found to have committed such, the law must take its cause.

We therefore strongly condemn the publicity-seeking Democratic Left who have nothing to offer but cheap rhetoric as well as their associations particularly in the Western Cape for making such wild unsubstantiated claims.

The NUM knows for sure that their ranting is about the hatred of the strides the NUM continues to make to free the black man from the shackles of poverty and their prayer and hopes for the return of apartheid.
