The race for the ANC president has begun.

On Friday night after a special meeting that ran several hours behind schedule ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe confirmed that the nomination process for the ANC leadership contest in Manguang in December is open.

"For all intents the nominations are open now but I would imagine nobody would call a branch general meeting tomorrow (on Saturday) or Sunday," he said.

Mantashe confirmed the ANC membership increased to 1 220 057 -- this is up from the figure announced during the party's centenary celebrations in Mangaung when membership stood at just over one million.

KwaZulu-Natal has seen a dramatic increase of around 90 000 members between January and September while the Eastern Cape membership had dropped significantly.

This led to a tweeter to comment that this is where "the anyone but Zuma campaign" could fail because Zuma's support base is KwaZulu -Natal.

Mantashe said deadline for nominations is at the end of November.

The number of delegates from each province will be finalised by Tuesday but he added that all 3 687 branches will be represented

Six hundred and thirty one branches had failed the audit process and therefore will not be able to send delegates to Mangaung.

Earlier in the day, delegates at a Gauteng ANC Women's League conference heckled provincial chairman Paul Mashatile when he joined their event in Pretoria.

Mashatile, who is believed to be opposed to a second term for Zuma, made hasty strides to the exit, shortly after he had entered the room and sat in front of the delegates.

Soon after Mashatile left, the delegates united in singing Zuma's signature song, Umshini wami.
