*Chamber of Mines agrees to re-open wage talks*

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) met the Chamber of Mines today in a bid to persuade the Chamber of Mines to re-open wage talks for both gold and coal.

The Chamber agreed to engage the NUM in accordance with the stipulations of the existing wage agreement which amongst others indicates that parties will investigate and probe working and other conditions of service.

The Chamber agreed to negotiate amongst others the following:

 * Increase for entry level workers

 * Adjustment or upgrading for operators which includes rockdrill operators

 * Investigating a package for social labour plans and transformation
   in general

The National Union of Mineworkers noted and shared the concerns raised by the Chamber of Mines on the levels of intimidation and violence in the current strikes.

The Chamber further raised the issue that the current unprotected strikes will have devastating negative effects and consequences especially for the gold sector.

The meeting was a follow-up of the meeting held on the 21st September. The parties agreed to meet again next Tuesday where an actual wage offer will be tabled in rand and cents.
