*The passing on of Zwelakhe Sisulu*The African National Congress has learned with sadness the passing on of Zwelakhe Sisulu an ardent anti-apartheid activist. The loss of Zwelahke Sisulu is a monumental loss to our nation. He has contributed in so many respects to the development of our country. He was an accomplished individual who was a Nieman scholar, editor, journalist and business person.
In the 1980s he emerged as a champion of alternative media and freedom of expression that saw him harassed and imprisoned.As a committed media activist he founded and became the Editor of The New Nation which was trailblazer initiative that provided a platform for the liberation movement and the mass democratic movement.
In the steps of his father and mother, Walter and Albertina Sisulu, he occupied a noticeable space in the mass democratic movement. When his brother Max and sister Lindi were in exile and his father serving a life sentence in Robben Island, Zwelakhe together with his mother Albertinah Sisulu, was continually harassed by the security police, he was arrested and detained for lengthy periods without trial during the state of emergency. His harassment drew the attention of international media organisations that called for his release and some picketed outside South African embassies.
His contribution to the liberation went beyond 1994 and he played a crucial role in the SABC as the Group Chief Executive where he was credited for stabilizing the public broadcaster. Owing to his passion of being a communicator, he also served as the Media Officer for Nelson Mandela. His contribution served as motivation and guide to generations that came after him. As the ANC we extend our condolence to his wife, kids and the entire Sisulu family.
