*NUM Media Release, 8 October 2012* *NUM condemns Angloplatinum for promoting racism*The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns Angloplatinum over insults hurled at its Rustenburg leader and an SABC journalist.
The leader went to address workers at Swartklip Union mine this morning and was harassed together with a journalist from the SABC, called names by the racist security representing the company.
The NUM Regional Secretary was hurled at with insulting swear words such as "hardgat" being bandied about.
The NUM condemns the racist conduct of Angloplatinum.It has become very clear that the company promotes racism through procuring security and other services from racists and their companies and that it has no intention to empower African people.
The company has a week ago embarked on mass dismissals and was in the process of doing the same at Swartklip when the NUM leaders sought to intervene and speak to members only to be met with imported racism of a special type.
The NUM is aware that companies such as Angloplatinum are unable to hide their excitement about the developing incidents in the mining industry which will enable them to hire and fire willy nilly.
The NUM is aware that the mining industry itself plays a significant role in the divide and rule amongst workers and it is no wonder that many of them have promoted the notion of offering workers some incentives outside bargaining structures and plead poverty during bargaining sessions.
