*SADTU angry over killings*** *SAPA, News24, Johannesburg, 10 October 2012 *The SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) on Wednesday expressed anger at the killing of NUM members and their families.
"These killings are used to instil fear among NUM [National Union of Mineworkers] members, which will eventually lead to the weakening of the organisation," Sadtu said in a statement.
"These killings are also a sign that the strikes in the mining industry are not about wages but to destroy NUM and Cosatu."
On Friday night, a NUM branch leader was shot dead at his home in Marikana, in what was described by the union as an "assassination".
A cousin of a NUM shopsteward was shot and killed in a hostel in Marikana on Saturday.
Five NUM members - two of them shopstewards - were killed in violence associated with a strike at Lonmin's platinum mine in Marikana near Rustenburg between 10 August and 16 August.
Of the 34 people shot dead by police trying to disperse a group of protesters on 16 August, 14 were NUM members, the union said.
Sadtu called on police to do their work and arrest the culprits behind the killings.
"So many workers have been killed, but we have not seen anyone being apprehended and brought before the courts.
"We also urge the employers in the mining industry to meet the workers' demands and improve the working conditions in the mines," Sadtu said.
