*Miners return to work* *Chris Makhaye, The New Age, Johannesburg, 20 November 2012*More than 1000 coal miners returned to work yesterday in Dundee and surrounding areas after an agreement was reached last week.
Workers have been on strike for more than two weeks demanding salary increases of between R2500 and R3000.
Yesterday workers started their shifts in the Magdalena and Aviemore underground mines in Nyanyadu and in the mine washing plant in Dundee.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and mine bosses signed an agreement on Thursday last week after the union sought a go-ahead from their members about a new offer.
The offer includes an immediate R700 wage increase from August until March when a further R300 increase will follow.
According to NUM regional leader Sfiso Myeni, the agreement entails that the lowest-paid worker would now earn just over R5300 while machine operators would earn more than R8500 a month.
