*‘Vote of No Confidence Motion’ Ruling*

The SACP welcomes the ruling of the Western Cape High Court which dismissed the application by the opposition parties in an attempt to force the National Assembly to schedule a debate on a motion of no confidence on the ANC President and President of the Republic.

This judgement entrenches an important principle of the separation of powers and is a lesson to the immaturity that has come to characterise the style of politics coming from the opposition benches in parliament. The parties collectively have sought to reduce parliament into a platform to pursue their anti-Zuma and anti-ANC campaign at the expense of dealing with the needs of the people. The opposition parties have invested heavily in opposing the ANC than prioritising the needs of the overwhelming majority of our people. The people have expressed their views in the general elections of 2009. It cannot be that every year the opposition uses frivolous methods to try and undermine that choice.

The DA and its surrogates are no longer interested in representing the electorate. The DA and their surrogates know nothing about democracy and people’s power. What they are interested in is to emphasise a system of check and balances and diffusion of power so that the interest of the elites are never shaken.

The SACP accepts that Parliament must, with reason, exercise its constitutional powers to pass a motion of no confidence but this cannot be abused for cheap publicity. At the same time the principle of majority rule must at no stage be compromised.

The opposition has ran out of ideas and alternative policy proposals and are pre-occupied with tarnishing the name and image of the person of the President in their quest to win the minds and the hearts of the electorate. This ploy by and large will backfire as it fundamentally undermines the intellect of the electorate.

The SACP will continue to participate to deepen radical democracy and build people’s power and influence in all sites of power. Sites of power must be transformed from merely narrowly protecting the interests of elites served by the opposition, but instead must serve our people.
