Subject: [YCLSA Discussion] The YCLSA welcomes the upgrade of Palestine to

The YCLSA welcomes the upgrade of Palestine to observer status in the UN

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) welcomes the vote by the
United Nations General Assembly which affirmed Palestine observer status.
Despite the hardline tactics used by Israel and the United States to try
prevent the bid, the vote passed with 138 countries for the upgraded status, 41
abstaining from the vote and just 9 against.

We are proud that the South African government remains principled on Palestine
and voted in favour of the resolution. Palestine will now have the opportunity
to partake in international conventions and treaties including the Geneva
Convention and the International Criminal Court (ICC). This could have the
effect that alleged Israeli war criminals are no longer free from the
consequences of international law and justice. We are also aware that Israel
has ignored 65 UN resolutions and insists that this historic vote will not
change the daily reality for the oppressed people of Palestine. We condemn
Israel's intransigence to the contempt it warrants.

Last weekend, the YCL national Lekgotla resolved to endorse Boycott, Divestment
and Sanctions (BDS) against apartheid Israel. Yesterday's successful bid proves
that Palestine and the majority of the world will not be bullied by the United
States and Israel and this marks a turning point in the struggle for a free
Palestine .The Public Services International (PSI) Congress, as the largest
public sector union globally and representing 20 million workers, endorsed BDS
against Israel this week. The mass movement against Israel is gaining momentum
rapidly and we encourage all people who believe in equality, liberty and
justice to be on the right side of history and join this struggle.
