YCLSA Press Statement YCLSA condemns the hate speech and distortion of history by Ivor Blumenthal
December 25, 2012 The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] condemns the attempt by Ivor Blumenthal to distort history for his own narrow political aims. In his blog post last week- which went viral over social networks- titled: You cannot fight it – A Jew is a Zionist? By birth, not by choice, Ivor states: [Jews opposed to Israel’s policies] “developed and forced through Parliament by – Jews, most of them who are the turncoat, ant-semetic (sic), self-hating, treacherous Jews” Aside from using hate speech and potentially inciting violence against Jews who don’t agree with his unconditional support for apartheid Israel, Blumenthal slanders and misuses brave members of the SACP who fought in the struggle for constitutional rights for all South Africans. The late comrades Joe Slovo and Arthur Chaskalson as whites in apartheid South Africa left the privilege that their race ensured to struggle for freedom of expression and association for all South Africans. Instead of praising and honouring these brave Jews, Blumenthal bemoans the fact that our constitution protects freedom of speech and prevents the death penalty. To suggest that comrades Slovo and Chaskalson drafted our world renowned constitution for personal benefit and protection is absurd when one considers their record in fighting for human rights for all. In a clear case of apartheid nostalgia Blumenthal compares the Mass Democratic Movement – the ANC, SACP and Cosatu- which fought to liberate South Africa to Nazi’s. He speaks longingly of the “death squads” which were prevalent under the apartheid regime and contributed to the deaths of hundreds of innocent South Africans. Ivor Blumenthal as previous CEO of Chai FM and current CEO of MY Hood Radio has a strong stake in Jewish community radio and thus has a large audience which would be unavailable to an ordinary blogger. We encourage all peace loving and justice seeking South Africans to condemn Blumenthal’s hate speech and slander. Apartheid nostalgia and incitement to violence have no place in a non-racial, democratic South Africa.
