YCLSA Press Statement December 26, 2012
YCLSA cautions against foreign interference in Syria The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] cautions against foreign involvement in Syria. We have been watching events unfold in Syria with concern as the death toll mounts and increasing numbers of refugees and homeless are reported daily. War will always reserve the most severe repercussions for the working class and defenseless in society. We note that the United States of America is funding Para-military groups within the opposition and has recently claimed that Bashar al- Assad’s regime possesses chemical weapons. This scant evidence of chemical warfare will possibly be used as a pretext for increased involvement in the region through a full-scale intervention or invasion. As witnessed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya the US relies on the flimsiest of claims to justify an invasion of countries they deem strategic. The Syrian people in their majority, regardless of their political positions, have rejected calling for foreign intervention. The South African government has remained principled in their stance on Syria; that all sides involved in the Syrian conflict need to negotiate with each other. An external solution imposed on a population will never be successful in the long term. Governments, multi-lateral organisations and activists who are truly interested in a just peace for Syria will reject the covert attempt to control the affairs of the country and expand the US Empire in the Middle East. It is only through direct negotiations, compromise and the will of the majority that the aspirations of millions of Syrian people will be realised.
