The call by COSAS and the Young Communist League of South Africa on Publishing of Matric Results.
To a sacrosanct extend, the call as made by the said organizations bears significance, but not on basis of the essence of their appeal, rather smaller portioned zones of the overall publishing. Regardless of whether the publishing is made or not, trauma and enthusiasm are compulsory features, considering the humane background of those the outcomes links towards, as learners in this regard. In conquering with the clarion call as made by the two organizations, I feel to raise less my contradictory note particularly on basis of the infringement of Section 14 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, on violation of the Right to Privacy versus the publication, as the publication has went on for decades and the fact that individual reaction has occurred since. Of course even beyond the department of Education shall have heed the call, people or the community will still find out of the performance of the learner, and if any criticism or applause is engaged into, it wouldn't have a different colour, and reaction will not be dissimilar. The reaction of a child after publishing is not something that can be diverted from or prepared for, as the child will from school or reading a paper go home were reality will have a conversation with him/her, both the Newspaper Company and the Department of Education will not be in the room. Therefore the reaction will still be beyond the crowd but limited to the victor or failure. Perhaps an argument be sharply articulated that the money as paid by the Department of Education to the Media House responsible for publication, can be of smart use somewhere in the suffering education system, which will adequately prepare children on how to befriend any outcome. The call is not particularly misplaced, rather its reasoning be adjusted to attract public support such that when Public Hearings by the National Council Of Provinces are held, our people are theoretically prepared to voice out against the publishing. I am raising these arguments not forgetting that the essential intention or objective for publishing was to fuel determination and deepening academic excellence amongst learners, as every child will study hard in order to appear on the National paper, the subsequent consequence was the ascending passing rate. With all said and the deeds are detrimental to families of the failed learners, the money should be rerouted to the payment of salaries for additional teachers and the purchase of adequate learner and teacher support material at all schools. The Department of Education should also move in an Austin Martin pace to create an equivalent education practices at both Public and Public Schools and furthermore deracialize access, in order to neutralize academic excellence, and the rating of performance by schools versus schools, as there is still an imbalance in the Education Sector. The rescinded publishing of results on newspapers to a just collection of Performance Records (Statements) will be more cost effective, and with that reasoning, makes me support the call by YCLSA and COSAS.
