*Office of the ANC Chief Whip, 27 January 2013* *Government relief effort in flood-stricken areas*The Office of the ANC Chief Whip in Parliament has been briefed, together with other parliamentary political parties, by the Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on the South African government's relief intervention in Mozambique following the floods that claimed lives and displaced thousands of people.
Here at home, heavy floods in some parts of the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces have also resulted in the deaths of a number of people, misplacement of thousands, destruction of houses and schools, and damage to road infrastructure and farms.
In all these tragic tragic situations in our provinces and Mozambique, the national government has been on the ground working with local governments and communities to provide much-needed assistance to the affected communities. Through the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs, a range of interventions are being implemented to bring about necessary relief in both Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
In Mozambique our government has put in place various rescue operations, including the deployment of the SA National Defence Force team consisting of divers and health professionals. Helicopters have also been deployed in flood ravaged areas and an aircraft has been sent with supplies to affected communities as part of our government's multipronged relief effort.
The Office of the Chief Whip appreciates the swiftness with which our government has reacted to these flood-stricken areas as well as the associated measures put in place to avoid further loss of lives and assist victims. During this time of tragedy and heartbreak, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in these floods. We call upon all South Africans to lend a helping hand in creating support structures to the victims, who amongst others also lost houses, businesses and livelihoods, in the process of rebuilding their lives.
