YCLSA Gauteng Press Statement February 12, 2013
YCLSA statement on the Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the province of Gauteng welcomes the reopening of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital Nursing College yesterday, Monday, 11 February 2013 by the Gauteng health department. This follows the closure of the college by the department last month after student protests. Among others the student protests were based on the allegation that there are students who were deliberately being failed. The YCL of South Africa calls on the Gauteng department of health to ensure that the process of dealing with this allegation moves with speed. This includes a review of scripts for examinations written since 2010. The YCL of South Africa is one of the social forces that intervened to have the college reopened as a matter of urgency. This was guided by the league’s objective to make education fissionable and the national principle to make it a societal priority, our goals for the advancement of human development through education, and the immediate task of reducing the persistently high rates of unemployment, poverty and inequality. The problems at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College partly stem from failures in administration, management and governance. This deteriorated to the extent that the Gauteng health department found itself embroiled in handling matters that are ordinarily handled by institutions of learning. In our view the failure in administration, management and governance at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College is associated with lack of proper structures and capacity in existing structures to keep pace with the times and transform accordingly. The YCL of South Africa therefore reiterates its call for the college to be realigned with the Higher Education Act.
