YCLSA Press Statement February 19, 2012
YCLSA notes the launch of Agang The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] notes the launch of the new “party political platform” called Agang by Dr Mamphela Ramphele. While much hype has been created around the party as a political alternative, aside from electoral reform, no clear policies have been adopted or resolved upon by this new platform. We emphasise that it is the constitutional right of every adult South African to stand for election and if elected, hold public office, however, Ramphele’s new party does not contain any alternatives to the governing party, rather it seeks to criticise the policies that the majority of South African voters have entrusted to the ANC led alliance. Ramphele mouths platitudes of transformation and change while she achieved little change at the three high-profile institutions she led. The University of Cape Town remains racially and economically exclusive despite Ramphele having been the vice- chancellor. The World Bank and Goldfields remain exploitative of the working class, regardless of Ramphele having held senior positions within these institutions. Ramphele uses her significant struggle credentials as a means to claim credibility yet she has not translated her opposition to the apartheid regime and black consciousness theory into support for the working class and economically marginalised. Ramphele casually implies that the poor and majority of South Africans are gullible and politically uneducated. This sentiment may be appealing to certain sectors of society including the Democratic Alliance but it is no way to view citizens, who regardless of class deserve dignified respect from political leaders. In an auspicious start for the political platform, it has come to light that Agang’s domain is registered under the non-profit company “Great Potential for South Africa”, which includes Moeletsi Mbeki and Prince Mashele as directors. Both of these “political analysts” have been thoroughly discredited due to their biased nature and allegations of corruption We remind South Africans of the successes of the ANC alliance in the last 19 years. The ANC as a congress movement does not use demagogic personalities to cover the lack of public support. With over one million members and a clear majority of South Africans giving the alliance the mandate, the National Democratic Revolution relies on our past successes and current policies to fight the triple ills of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
