YCLSA Gauteng Press Statement February 20, 2013
YCLSA Concerned about increasing incidence of rape crimes The Young of Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in Gauteng is deeply concerned by the increasing number of rape incidences in the province. Particularly in the north western areas of the Greater Tshwane district the rape incidences are coupled with other forms of violence including disappearances and murder of the victims. We appeal to communities to unite and embark on a standing and thoroughgoing mobilisation against these ruthless and heartless evils. The law enforcement agencies and the judiciary must also to strengthen their hand, leave no stone unturned and put their foot down when dealing with rape cases, disappearance, murder and all other forms of violence and abuse against women. And while this is the right thing to do the weakness is that it is largely a reactive response. We need a multifaceted approach comprising of the same reactive response hardened and intensified as well as a proactive response. In this regard we are calling on the implementation of the Freedom Charter’s clarion call: “The aim of education shall be to teach the youth to love their people and their culture, to honour human brotherhood, liberty and peace” This must be translated and integrated in school curriculum from early childhood development. We also need the role of social sciences, among others social work, sociology and phycology to be deepened in helping our society understand and proactively deal with violence and abuse against women through preventive approaches. It is our considered view that economic transformation and development must not be left out from the multifaceted response which we are calling for. Many forms of social consciousness and behaviours are most often than not if not always an outgrowth of particular aspects of the relations of production as part of the deeper underlying causal factors. In the next Plenary Session of our National Committee we will also ask that the roles of the national departments of social development and women and people with disabilities be looked at anew with respect to these matters.
