YCLSA Press Statement

YCLSA outraged at the conditions of Israeli prisons

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] joins the Palestinian
people and progressive movements around the world in condemning the inhumane
conditions of Israeli prisons. The unlawful detention of Palestinian people
living in the occupied West Bank was highlighted in the death last week of
Arafat Jaradat after being detained indefinitely for allegedly throwing a stone
at an armed soldier. The 30 year old father of two was tortured to death with
gruesome bruises and broken bones revealing the full extent of the horror.

Close to a million Palestinians have been detained by Israeli forces since
1967. Over 200 Palestinians have died mysteriously while in Israeli custody.
Dozens more have died after release due to medical negligence in Israeli
prisons or as a result of the torture they underwent while in custody. Hundreds
of Palestinian minors are placed in solitary confinement every year with no
access to legal representation.

Israel’s status as an apartheid state is cemented by its horrific treatment of
detainees and minors in its prison system. The YCL has endorsed Israel
Apartheid Week taking place across Southern Africa11-17 March and will use this
period to raise awareness of Israeli apartheid practices towards Palestinian
detainees and minors. Furthermore, we will encourage government, business and
civil society to end all ties with companies profiting from Israel’s gruesome
treatment the Palestinian people.

As South Africans, we have experienced the injustices meted out to political
prisoners by the brutal apartheid regime. We will repay the enormous debt of
international solidarity during our struggle by continuing to stand with
oppressed people around the world.
