Thobani Matheza. I had not seen it before.
For your information, the author, Hugh Macmillan, is my first cousin.
His late mother was my late father's sister. His father was the late W M
Macmillan, a well-known liberal historian of South Africa. I have known
Hugh since we were boys. We are the same age.
My cousin's politics are not the same as mine.
This piece of work of his is no different from the rest of his work. His
political agenda is disguised behind an appearance of scholarship. The
scholarly appearance is spurious. The document is full of booby-traps.
It is a dishonest piece of work: dishonest to the core.
The intentions behind the document are hostile to the ANC, and to the
liberation movement generally.
I have no idea what your intentions may have been, Cde Thobani Matheza,
when you circulated this document in this way, without any critical
guidance, while styling yourself as Senior Researcher, Social
Transformation Cluster, ANC Research and Development Unit. I notice that
among the recipients there are major media outlets.
I think it was wrong of you to do such a thing, Cde Matheza. You may
intend to deny this, but your circulation of such a document implies
that you, and behind you, the ANC, are giving some kind of approval to it.
This is not what you do with a piece of disinterested scholarship, if
ever there is such a thing.
One can only conclude at this moment that your intention is to set off a
political bombshell. In which case, I think that you are going to be
disappointed. The only people who are likely to get excited about this
document are the ones, like R W Johnson and Paul Trewhela, who have been
trying to plow this particular field for so many years, without
harvesting more than a few bitter aloes. Their hopes will again be
dashed. The ground will be found to be as stony for Macmillan as it has
been for these others.
What you are circulating is nothing better than stale White Mischief,
Cde Matheza.
Do please explain yourself, if you can.
