10 April 2013 Press statement
For immediate release Western Cape SACP to hold a protest march to demand housing for the poor from Zille Administration Exactly 20 years ago, one of the most outstanding sons of our struggle for freedom and fiercest opponent of poverty and injustice, Chris Hani, was killed by right wing assassins Januzs Waluz and Clive Derby Lewis. He fought for total liberation of the poor and oppressed for-which he paid the ultimate price and his death ushered in the democracy and freedoms we now enjoy! To mark the 20th Anniversary of his cowardly assassination, the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape will hold a protest march to the DA-led Provincial Government to deliver a memorundum demanding decent houses and basic services for the poor. The details are as follows: Date: Friday, 12 April 2013 Time : 11:00 am Assembly point: Kaizergracht street, Cape Town Speakers Khaya Magaxa: SACP Provincial Secretary Marius Fransman: ANC Provincial Chairperson Chris Hani was a champion of the poor! He fought for a just and equal society and he once explained the SACP's ideology, socialism, simply that, "Socialism is not about big concepts and heavy theory. Socialism is about decent shelter for those who are homeless. It is about water for those who have no safe drinking water........It is about health care, it is about a life of dignity for the old." The 1st campaign that Hani led as General Secretary of the SACP in 1991 was the Triple H Campaign. This campaign focused on Housing, Hunger and Health which shows a strong conviction of rejecting the present system which favours the rich and privileged while exploiting and marginalizing the working poor, the unemployed and the underprivileged. Chris Hani was also an outstanding leader of the ANC serving in the National Executive Committee until his tragic death at the hands of rightwing assassins. The ANC led government has since 1994 pursued objectives of ensuring justice and dignity to the oppressed and marginalized majority through provision of decent houses, clean water, affordable electricity, safe and reliable public transport. The ANC led government has transformed South Africa since the democratic breakthrough. The 2009 manifesto specifically committed to build houses for the working poor and the unemployed in close proximity to places of work. The ANC committed to building new settlements that foster inclusiveness and integration as a basis for realizing non-racial, non-sexist and united communities. In advancing the transformative agenda of the liberation struggle, the ANC also committed to upgrading informal settlements to ensure the security of tenure and access to basic services. The DA in the Western Cape has consistently perverted these transformative programmes and has failed to meet even the lowest targets. Since the DA assumed power it has failed to even equal the record of housing delivery and informal settlements upgrading set by the ANC between 2004 - 2009. Thousands of residents in Stellenbosch, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mitchell'Plain, Langa, Philippi, Chatsworth, Grabouw, Masiphumelele, Ocean View, Hout Bay, De Doorns to mention a few continue to live a life of indignity and misery without houses or decent water, sanitation and electricity. Families in these communities continue to experience devastating fires that destroy their shelter and belongings rendering them homeless and destitute. This is purely the DA's fault due to its continued failure to provide housing with basic services such as electricity instead allows people to live in shacks using paraffin stoves for heating and cooking which increases the risk of fire. In the coming winter period these communities will be subjected to severe floods which once again will displace them and damage their belongings due to lack of housing and other infrastructure. The DA has no plans to meet the housing needs of poor communities and safeguarding their constitutional right to shelter, security and dignity. Chris Hani was a champion of the poor and the SACP and ANC, in his honour, will organise all communities in the Western Cape to demand utilisation of nationally allocated revenue to address their housing needs. We will bring Cape Town to a stand still forcing the DA to stop racism and spending money on the elite, and prioritise the needs of the poor or vacate government before being voted out in the 2014 elections. The poor majority will demonstrate their anger, power and ability to bring down Zille!
