NEHAWU

*Media Statement, 18 April, 2013***

*NEHAWU is not surprised by the lies peddled by Netcare*

NEHAWU is not surprised by the lies that are currently being peddled by Netcare regarding the ongoing strike because it is something we have become to expect from them. Netcare has been circulating a statement claiming that only 1153 or 5,7% of employees at Netcare are NEHAWU members.

This is just a lame attempt at propaganda and spin doctoring in order to try and mislead the public and patients at Netcare. NEHAWU has about 3445 members at Netcare and happens to be the only union represented in over 21 hospitals nationwide. We have documents to substantiate our claim and we challenge Netcare to provide proof in support of their claims.

It would not be the first time they have mislead the public. This is the company, after all, that was involved in the kidney trafficking scandal a couple of years ago. They view everything through the prism of reactionary proprietors. They are not concerned about providing quality healthcare to South Africans, but are more concerned about, how much they can make from the plight of the sick people.

We refuse to allow them to exploit our members and use them as cheap labour. We are also aware that they are using unqualified students to counter the impact of the strike, therefore compromising the lives of their patients. They are using intimidation tactics to bully our members into submission. We are disgusted by these reports but we are not surprised and will be pursuing the abuse and intimidation allegations without fail.

Any organisation that can be involved in the trafficking of human parts to make money is not to be trusted with the truth, let alone with the people's lives. We do not expect them to put people's lives before profits.

Our union will keep the door opened for them to come back to the negotiating table in order to resolve the current impasse but we will not be intimidated and blackmailed by Netcare.
