*SADTU: 25000 teachers want Motshekga gone*

*Katharine Child, The Times, Johannesburg, 23 April, 2013*

The SA Teacher's Union is expecting 25000 teachers to down tools and join protests across the country tomorrow.

The union wants Education Minister Angie Motshekga and her director-general, Bobby Soobrayan, to be fired for "plunging this country [into] one crisis [after] another".

The union's general secretary, Mugwena Maluleke, said some schools in North West had not received textbooks for the year, and schools in Limpopo had not received the year's operational budget for school maintenance and day-to-day expenses.

The union has accused the department of undermining a collective bargaining agreement in 2011 by backtracking on a pay rise for teachers who mark matric exams.

Maluleke said these allowances had been cancelled "without consultation". Teachers have refused to mark the matric supplementary exams written in February and will not attend meetings outside teaching hours.

The Department of Education yesterday called Wednesday's march an illegal strike and threatened "drastic action".

It urged principals to take attendance registers and said teachers who signed registers and then left schools to protest would be disciplined.

 * Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba is heading for Eastern Cape in an
initiative backed by Equal Education, reports Nashira Davids.

He has invited academics, activists and analysts to visit some
of the province's most embattled schools.

Branded the Eastern Cape Schools Solidarity Visit, it will take
place from April 23 to 26.
