*YCLSA** Press Statement on al- Nakba Day, Free the Wits 11 and Isolate Israel* The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] notes the 65th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe), which commemorates the establishment of the State of Israel, and the resulting massacres, dispossession and ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Palestinians from the land. The Nakba remains a current reality with millions of Palestinians living under Israeli military rule and as refugees while denied basic human rights. It is imperative that South Africans, as the recipients of international solidarity during our struggle against apartheid, repay the debt of gratitude by standing in solidarity with all oppressed people, including the people of Palestine. Wits University by charging the Wits 11 repositions itself from a progressive institution to an institution that supports Israeli apartheid policies. We demand that all charges against the Wits 11 be dropped with immediate effect. Our public institutions must never bow to the Israeli lobby and support human rights abuses in other countries. The YCL supports the march undertaken in Pretoria today by the Communication Workers Union (CWU), together with Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) South Africa to demand an end to exploitative labour practices and breaking of all ties between the Department of Communications and Israeli businesses and entities. Israel must be isolated through the Palestinian call for BDS until it brings its policies in line with international law and human rights. It is through the principled internationalism and shared struggles that South African progressive trade unions, students and civil society support that we anticipate a Free Palestine and an end to the ongoing Nakba.
