*TRIBUTE TO CDE JENNIFER “MZALA” NHLAPHO*
**

*16 March 1977 -17 May 2013*

In the life of every nation, there are both women and men who leave an
indelible mark in the history of their people because they are products and
makers of their own history. And when they pass they leave a vision of a
new and better life and the tools with which to win and build on and this
is the legacy of Cde `Mzala’.

On the 17th May 2013, the people of the Northern Cape lost a beloved one.
The Young Communist League of South Africa takes this time and pay a
tribute to this young revolutionary activist described by many as the most
disciplined, articulate and dedicated communist cadre of our movement. It
is with deep sense of sadness to all of us, yet with pride for her
contribution, that the YCLSA in the Northern Cape dips its banner in honour
of Cde. Jennifer Nhlapho, a gallant fighter, a volunteer, a young communist
for Socialism.

Cde Jennifer Nomsa Nhlapho, affectionately known to her comrades and
compatriots as ‘Mzala’, was born in Galeshewe, Kimberley on the 16th March
1977. We remember Cde Mzala as a fearless volunteer who worked tirelessly
to advance the revolutionary project. Cde Mzala cut her teeth as a leader
of Galeshewe Cultural Group (GACGRO) at the age of 14, later became
involved in the ANCYL, Student and Church Youth activism.

She also initiated a Workplace Forum and represented casualised workers at
SANLAM. Cde Mzala comprehended and articulated tasks of the revolution
with great intellectual clarity due to her appreciation and thorough a
proper grasp of revolutionary theory in guiding her political action. Her
rigorous exposition of the political situation in her Branch and District
let to her election as the Parks Leburu District Deputy Secretary in 2012.

A true young communist, she will be remembered for her unparalleled passion
for education and gender activism, which made her form part of the
formidable force to reckon with on issues affecting Women. This made her
one of the most effective volunteer and a gallant fighter of the Communist
Party who combined both theory with practice.

Her character as a communist was most exemplified in her unwavering
commitment to work with branches of the YCLSA in the District to build
their capacity. Cde. Mzala understood that branches of the YCLSA are at the
coalface of the national democratic struggle. She criss-crossed the vast
District of the Parks Leburu launching branches, mobilising and educating
branches of the YCLSA, equipping them for the tasks demanded by the
revolution.

This was a communist who did not have taste for fame and glory; she only
had the love for ordinary working people and the poor. With her passion to
change the lives of ordinary working class woman and youth, she could have
been anything she wanted to be, yet she chose to be with ordinary people,
understanding fully that they are the bedrock of our revolution.

Even during her last few days with ailing health, Cde Mzala demonstrated a
communist quality of bravery and fought till the end. She refused to die!
One time although very ill she remarked, “I wonder is the work of the YCL
in the District going forward” speaking to her peers.

The YCLSA in the Northern Cape will surely miss her contribution and her
commitment till the end and for that reason we will double our efforts to
bring Socialism in our lifetime. We remain comforted in the knowledge and
the fact that she has strengthened many women cadres, as leaders they now
by know they have nothing to lose but to continue to fight until the end.

You fought a good fight….and we want to be like you.
