*YCLSA Women’s day message*

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] joins all South
Africans in celebrating women’s day which will be observed tomorrow [August
9]. We pay reverence to the class of 1956 who marched on this day to
petition against legislation that required Africans to carry a "pass".

We salute all the brave 20 000 women led by Lilian
Ngoyi<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilian_Ngoyi>
, Helen Joseph <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Joseph>, Rahima
Moosa<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rahima_Moosa>
, Sophie
Williams<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sophie_Williams_%28activist%29&action=edit&redlink=1>
and
Frances Baard who marched to the Union Buildings, protesting against the
Urban Areas Act and its amendments. Some of them were carrying their babies
on their backs.

As we celebrate this year's anniversary of the 1956 women’s march, many
issues must be confronted with determination when we consider the
horrifying conditions that women live in. Women continue to be on the
receiving end of violence, including rape, and many other ills and
disparities. Members of the YCLSA will intensify their struggle for the
emancipation of all women as part of the struggle against patriarchy and
capitalist exploitation.

Women continue to be victims of unfair labour practices and unpaid
reproductive work. In our quest to build a non-sexist society we have not
focused enough on building an economic system that values women, especially
the working class women.

We need to build a non-sexist society that will ensure that women are safe
from all forms of abuse and violence and have equal access to opportunities
as men are.

As we focus on the immediate, practical needs of women including health,
food and jobs, it is also critical that we pay attention to structural
changes needed, including access to funding for enterprise and
co-operatives development.
