9 August 2013 ANC wishes Muslim Compatriots Eid Mubarak The Islamic Holy month of Ramadaan has passed, and today our Muslim compatriots and Muslims all over the world will celebrate Eidul-Fitr. For the past month, the faithful had deprived themselves of food and drink from before sunrise until sunset, solely for the pleasure of their Almighty. The practice of fasting sublimates the inner self of man and inculcates discernment of the pangs and hardships which the poor and needy face. It is the loftiest achievement of moral exercises which is celebrated with the greatest zest and verve on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. Indeed, the Eid itself is known as Eidul Fitr because the charity of Fitra has to be paid before the Eid prayer. The charity of Fitra is to purify one who fasts from any indecent act or speech. It also helps the poor and needy and ensures that they also celebrate the day in a pleasurable manner. The month of Ramadaan and the day of Eid is a lesson of discipline, sacrifice, focus and care for the impoverished. It is important that these lessons carry through the year and increase all our efforts to develop a caring society. The African National Congress wishes all Muslims Eidul Fitr Mubaarak.
