*YCLSA Western Cape Press Statement* August 14, 2013
*YCLSA CALLS FOR MORE RESPONSIBLE, ALCOHOL-FREE DRIVING AND ROAD USE* The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the Western Cape has noted with regret the arrest of an ANC NEC member, Cde Tony Yengeni on Sunday, August 11, 2013. He was arrested in Cape Town on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. His arrest is said to be one of 52 other arrests made over this period. We call for more responsible, alcohol-free driving and road use. Understanding that drinking and driving knows no political affiliation, we implore all to desist from politicizing road traffic violations. We have already noted with great disdain, postulations and grandstanding by the DA MEC for Transport, Robin Carlisle and Diane Kohler-Barnard, accusing offenders from certain political parties as "not fit for office”. Their selective amnesia has led to them forgetting about the recent re-arrest of a DA youth leader (and a mayoral committee member of the Eden District Municipality) Tertius Simmers, who was caught driving without a valid licence. A string of DA office bearers who have been caught drinking and driving in recent months like Breede Valley ward councillor for Rawsonville Robert Blom who was caught for the second time (also without a valid licence) as well as Drakenstein ward councillor Willem Johannes Naudé who was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Ours is not to exonerate any offender of any traffic violation, but to put impetus on all leaders of political parties and public representatives to always adhere to traffic rules. They should at all times be exemplary and take a lead in fight against road carnage. 65% of all fatal crashes on our roads are alcohol related and they regularly happen over weekends, a period characterized by high alcohol consumption levels. These have serious effects on the country's socio-economic fabric, accounting for R306 billion losses per annum. Let us all take it upon ourselves to ensure compliance with traffic laws and support all road safety initiatives, particularly those relating to alcohol-free driving and road use.
