Fired sex pest 'will prey on women'

Bongekile Macupe, Sunday Independent, Johannesburg, 11 August 2013

It is not enough that Dr Last Moyo was fired from Wits after being found
guilty of sexual harassment as he is still going to "prey on young women".

This is according to Refilwe Khumalo, one of Moyo's victims.

The 23-year-old told The Sunday Independent this week that even though she
appreciated the efforts the university took in dealing with the sexual
harassment scandal, she would have been "happier" had Moyo been stripped of
his credentials as a lecturer.

For Khumalo, being fired from Wits does not take anything away from Moyo,
whom she thinks will still carry on "with the idea of preying on young
women".

"I'm not happy with the fact that he was just dismissed, he is still going
to find another job in a couple of months," she said. "Someone will hire
him, somewhere, some day and it won't stop . It's going to carry on for
generations to come as long as he's still around and can teach," she said.

Moyo, a media studies senior lecturer, was fired along with Tshepo Wa Mamatu
after being found guilty of sexual harassment and misconduct. One of them
has also been found guilty of indecent assault.

The university said the two had been found to be in breach of their sexual
harassment policy, relationship guidelines and code of conduct.

Khumalo said if Moyo teaches at another institution he will still "see women
as sex objects".

She said that after the hearing she had not thought the outcome of the case
would be positive. "The hardest thing about the hearing was sitting there
with a man who was trying to justify his actions. It made me sick, it was
the most horrifying thing. I just couldn't believe it," said Khumalo.

"Him saying he was not guilty was just another thing. He should have said
sorry and carried on with his life but he decided to fight and that's the
sick part about it because you're trying to justify that you're not a sex
pest, and you're sick."

Khumalo said she was also disappointed at the insinuations made by Moyo's
lawyers about her.

She recalled how the lawyers told the hearing that she had sent Moyo a kiss
on BBM and that after seeing the kiss his wife called Khumalo.

"His wife never called me, it was such a lie," she said.

Instead Khumalo said she was the one who got a BBM message from Moyo telling
her that his wife was away for a couple of days and he wanted her to come
and visit him.

"I concluded that this man just wants to get into my pants. Why would you
invite me to your house for a couple of days. To do what? We were not going
to talk about my marks or anything."

Khumalo said her first personal encounter with Moyo was two years ago after
she had missed classes and went to consult him in his office to ask for an
extension on an essay she hadn't written. She had a charge of culpable
homicide against her and missed classes because she was attending court.

After consulting Moyo, Khumalo said she later received a Facebook invite
from Moyo and didn't think much of it and accepted him as a friend. He got
hold of her BBM pin from Facebook and invited her and again she accepted
him.

Khumalo said she started receiving inbox messages on Facebook from Moyo
telling her that she was "beautiful and attractive". And on BBM he also sent
her private messages which had nothing to do with her studies.

"It was very clear from the BBM and Facebook messages that he wanted
something more," she said.

She said because she was going through her legal case she stopped
communicating with Moyo. But when the Sunday Times broke the story of sexual
harassment at the university, she decided to break her silence.

Other people thought she was "making noise" about something that did not
exist, she said.

"A lot of people don't understand what I went through and people won't
understand how we feel about this because they were not part of it and you
don't know what happened," she said. "I came out publicly because when
something happens people need to put a face to it. I'm not ashamed about it.
It happened and yes it was bad. Bad things happen to good people." This week
Moyo told The Star that he did not sexually harass any student and he
intended challenging his dismissal through the Commission for Conciliation,
Mediation and Arbitration.
