Cosatu intelligence report 'a complete fabrication'

Embattled Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi is the one who circulated
a damning intelligence report aimed at destroying him, Cosatu president
Sdumo Dlamini said yesterday.

Vavi, who was suspended after admitting he had sex with a married junior
staff member at Cosatu's headquarters, claimed on Friday that Dlamini
circulated the report to Cosatu leaders who attended the special Cosatu
central executive committee (CEC) meeting which placed him on special leave
on Wednesday.

The report, which Vavi dismissed as a complete fabrication and part of a
political conspiracy to get rid of him, claimed Vavi was an agent of the
National Endowment for Democracy, an American think-tank.

Dlamini said if anyone had circulated the report, it was Vavi.

"He brought the report to the (CEC) meeting on Wednesday. And he is the one
circulating it, even to you guys (the media). If anybody is distributing the
report, it's him," said Dlamini. The Cosatu president said it was a lie he
had a hand in the circulation of the report. "In fact, I have even taken a
stance that I'm not going to give it (report) any response," he said.

A letter from Vavi's lawyers read: "It is our instructions that there is now
clear proof that the President of Cosatu has been distributing the documents
... to delegates who will attend the meeting of 14 August 2013, and others,
some of whom were instructed by him to read it in his presence, clearly in
order to influence them against client."

Dlamini said he was not out to destroy his comrade. "He knows I can't do
that thing. He sees it convenient to accuse me so that people focus on me.
But I'm not surprised," said Dlamini.

He was not sure when the report would be discussed by Cosatu, "but I'm sure
it will (be discussed)". Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said the report
would be discussed, "hopefully today (Monday)".

Vavi has said he would challenge his suspension from Cosatu, adding the
decision would be proven to be both procedurally and substantially unfair.

Other Cosatu leaders yesterday said Vavi released a "bogus intelligence"
report, to shift attention away from his undisciplined and "un-Cosatu-like"
behavior.

Several high ranking officials claimed Vavi did not want to face the wrath
of his own indiscretion and was now resorting to "shady tricks".

"There is something fishy. This so called intelligence report has been
around in the corridors for more than two months. Why did he bring it up
now? Wednesday's meeting was about him having sex with a young employee on
Cosatu premises," a source said.

"We had the report. Did Dlamini give us the report? No. Was the report to be
tabled at the Special CEC? No. I don't know why he brought this up. That
document was never tabled to be discussed," the source said.

When asked whether Cosatu leaders took the contents of the report seriously,
another source said that "any form of intelligence was worth looking into".

"But we didn't officially discuss that intelligence report. Last week we
were just trying to save Cosatu's reputation because of Vavi's wrong doing."

Meanwhile, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has reportedly warned Vavi
and his backers not to drag the ANC into the factional war bedevilling
Cosatu.

This after Vavi reportedly said on Friday that a campaign was under way to
reduce Cosatu into a labour desk of the ANC which ambitious leaders would be
used to advance their careers.
