NEHAWU Media Statement, 20 August 2013 Special NEC Statement NEHAWU held a special National Executive Committee meeting on the 19th of August 2013 at the Parktonian Hotel in Johannesburg to discuss the latest developments at COSATU. After receiving a detailed report from the NOB's on the outcomes of the COSATU Special CEC and extensive deliberations; the SNEC accepted the decision by the federation to place the General Secretary of COSATU, Cde Zwelinzima Vavi and a staff member on special leave for their alleged misconduct. We also agree with the decision to conduct a full investigation into the allegations and also appoint an independent person to chair the disciplinary hearings. NEHAWU's national and provincial leaders will be communicating the outcomes of both the COSATU SCEC and of NEHAWU SNEC to all our union structures; at provincial, regional and branch levels. General membership meetings will be convened to discuss the latest developments coming out of our federation. The SNEC hopes the federation will be able to deal with this matter in a way that protects the standing of our federation and its commitment to gender struggles as evidenced by its progressive adopted policies. The workers of this country expect our federation to be transparent and be at the forefront of the struggles against the exploitation of both male and female workers in the same way. Allegations of sexual impropriety should be handled in a manner that does not prejudice either party. We therefore expect all affiliates of the federation to show discipline by respecting the binding outcomes of the COSATU SCEC without exception. The COSATU National Office Bearers in a Special CEC press conference held on Thursday, 15th August 2013, said that; "every individual and structure involved must respect the internal processes, without exception, and issues must only be communicated to media by National Office Bearers." We expect the leadership of COSATU to provide strategic leadership and act decisively to ensure that all affiliates and COSATU structures at all levels adhere to and respect the federation's internal democracy and protocols. The federation should at all times be guided by the principle of democratic centralism. We will await the outcome of the investigation and due to the seriousness of the allegations; we call on the federation to ensure that the process is characterised by fairness and in line with the COSATU constitution.
