NUM condemns mining sector retrenchment blackmail

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) condemns in the strongest words
possible the blackmail unleashed by mining companies led by Angloplatinum in
announcing massive retrenchments. Angloplatinum which appears to be leading
the pack in terms of the blackmail announcing retrenchments of 6900 workers
contrary to the 3000 proposed during the consultation process.

The NUM made proposals that the three thousand jobs Angloplatinum wanted to
do away with should be addressed through Voluntary Severance Packages (VSP),
natural attrition and transfers to other operations.

The NUM is shocked by Angloplatinum's announcement of its intention to
retrench 6900. Other companies who are using blackmail to weaken current
wage negotiations includes Sibanye Gold, Anglogold Ashanti, Blyvoor
liquidations, Buffelsfontein closure, Goldfields and Harmony Gold.

The NUM strongly condemns these irresponsible companies. "The jobs bloodbath
is a clear attack on the working class and the poor, a direct attack on
mineworkers generally. Our union will respond accordingly" says Frans
Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.
