23 August 2013 NUM slams Ramphele over double standards NUM slams hypocritical Ramphele The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has noted Dr Mamphele Ramphele's glaring double-speak, double standards and hypocrisy. Dr Ramphele has always portrayed herself as a paragon of virtue, blasting Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) saying "the way BEE has been applied has failed in its primary purpose of transforming the economy but has created high compliance costs and only enriched a tiny politically connected elite". She is an elite herself that has benefited from BEE whilst millions of South Africans continue to live a life of abject poverty. Dr Ramphele made over R40 million from BEE deals yet goes on to decry the policies that benefited her. If she is indeed a paragon of virtue as she project herself, let her donate the millions she made out of an "improper policy" to the Marikana injured and arrested who need that money dearly. The NUM is disappointed that someone who has been part of the mining oligarchy at Goldfields and has done nothing to uplift the poor but instead became part of the oppressors, has become a loud-mouth, projecting herself as head and shoulder above the rest. When she served at the World Bank, she hired her son at the institution, something which if it were done by others would have been problematic for her. The National Union of Mineworkers is disappointed by her hypocrisy and her holier than thou attitude.
